From Bangkok to Chiang Mai: Fly, Bus or Train
By buses: https://www2.
The least expensive method is to take a bus, but this is also the least comfortable. Even though most tourist buses have air conditioning, reclineable seats, and play movies, people who take this ten hour trip do not consider it very comfortable.
Buses from Bangkok to Chiang Mai depart at least every hour between 05:30 and 22:00 from Mo Chit (Northern) Station. Mor Chit is the last BTS station on the line.
The bus takes roughly 10 hours. VIP buses are recommended (fare THB500 – 800), offered by either the government or private companies. These can also be arranged from travel agents.
By train: https://www.
Several trains run between Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station and Chiang Mai Station every day. The journey usually takes between 12 and 15 hours. Delays are fairly common.
Night services are ideal for making the long journey more bearable, especially if you book a bunk in a sleeper carriage. Second-class bunks (in a air-con carriage, second class) cost around 700–900 THB (approximately 20–30 USD), and bunks in air-conditioned carriages, first class cost more. The lower bunks are slightly more expensive in each carriage, as they provide more space. You could also opt for a bed in a first-class room. Rooms sleep four and are lockable.
